Deli Döner, Dubai – Review
For the ♥ of Doner…
The delectable Turkish Döner Kebabs have a come a long way. Having started off as an Ottoman delicacy, a favorite of the Sultans and his harem, the Döner meat made its way into the Greek cuisine with the invention of gyros and over to the Middle East with the scrumptious street favorite the shawarma. None the less the Döner still reign strong in the culinary street culture of Europe and the Middle East.
Döner Deli, an authentic German Doner kebab joint, offers the quintessential German Döner kebabs made with fresh and natural ingredients. With locally grown vegetables, Döner Deli exports 100% halal meat straight from the artisan farms in Europe, for the ultimate German Döner experience.
Founded by Hazem Elgendy and Mustafa Alrefaie, the duo traveled extensively to Turkey, Greece, Lebanon and Germany, and finally came up with their own Döner recipe, turning the finest ingredients and most innovative preparation methods into delicious wholesome street food. With an unstoppable creative drive to bring cultures and tastes together, Hazem and Mustafa created a unique formula based on a German recipe that blends the rich flavors with the famous German pita bread.
Having heard a lot about the famous German Döner, we wanted to try the relative twin of the famous Middle Eastern grub; Shawarma so we went to Döner Deli – Al Barari to try out the marriage of flavors between Europe and Arabia. Al Barari is a relatively new neighborhood in Dubai, and reaching there was as easy as can be. A straight route on E13 leads you to your destination in a single exit.
Once at the restaurant cum café, the menu was simple, doner kebab in a variety of bread and sides. Since we wanted to try the traditional variety we ordered the classic pita Döner, with a side of pomegranate salad. The considerably large portion came oozing with freshly shredded chunks of juicy (Döner) meat, sandwiched between fresh local vegetables (onions, lettuce, red cabbage, and tomatoes). Being essentially a street food, the classic Döner kebab in pita was huge, and it was difficult to handle, we would suggest to let yourself loose and dig in with your bare hands. Once we finally managed to handle the delicious beast, the rest became easier. A single bite of the Döner was a feast of its own, with crunchy vegetables and chunks of tender juicy meat, spiced with garlic mayo and deli tomato sauce, it became probably the most filling bite we’ve had in a while. Forget all about the heavily advertised burger chains bragging big juicy giants, or fried chicken that promises to deliver the finest fried chicken there can be, Döner Deli has a category of its own. For those with a good appetite, Döner Deli lives up to its promise. Decadent with a generous portion the Döner Kebab is here to stay…
Besides Döner, the restaurant also serves signature shakes and deserts along with a small coffee counter that serves freshly brewed coffee. Perfect for a filling dinner, lunch or snacking, Döner Deli also home delivers and caters to the nearby communities.
