Roti Rollers – La Mer Dubai – Review
Fresh, wholesome and downright delicious, Roti Rollers at La Mer Jumeirah Dubai, is a quirky Indian street food restaurant, offering not just delicious food but meticulously crafted healthy fares promising the real taste of homemade food.
Taking inspiration from the much coveted classic Indian street food combined with the modern taste and rolled to perfection the restaurant brags about creating the perfect Roti Rolls in Dubai. Using succulently grilled kebabs, tikkas and vegetables, the menu includes a line-up of delicious grubs including rolls (wraps), Pav Bhaji, Chaat, and more.
One beautiful December afternoon when Dubai is mildly warm and buzzes with the lightness of the weather, we headed to La Mer, to try the Roti Rollers and catch up with an old friend. The restaurant is comfortably located near South 1 parking at La Mer. Artfully designed with colorful accents from Southeast Asia, as soon as you step inside the restaurant a splash of colorful décor welcomes you. With wooden roadside benches and tables painted in bright colors, filigrees in perky hues and a light airiness adds to the refreshing feel of the restaurant.
As we settled in the menu instantly caught our eyes. Printed on a yellow paper with black font it reminded us of the Taxis on the busy Indian streets pervaded with street food vendors selling the real taste of the land. The very customizable menu had a number of options to choose from. From Thalis to Rolls to snacks and sweets, there’s plenty for every one and every palate.
After placing our order we were immediately served with spicy Indian snacks to munch on, wrapped in silver paper cones with tangy puffed rice, flakes and exotic spices the snack is highly addictive. For our main course, we ordered two different types of wraps or Rotis, the aptly named ‘Hen Steffani’ in beetroot roti and the funky ‘Up all night to get plucky’ wrap in avocado Roti. ‘Hen Steffani’ has a mild taste, with chunky chicken kebabs, Indian style guacamole, and mayo wrapped in a roti prepared with beetroot. The end result is a mesmerizing sweet flavored roll with melt in the mouth bits of kebab complete with the rustic aroma of beetroot roti. The wraps came with masala fries with a dash of homemade spicy masala that added the ultimate pizazz to the taste.
The second wrap ‘Up all night to get plucky’ was a manifestation of the ultimate Indian favorite, the chicken tikka. Wrapped in the succulent pieces of chicken tikka with special tikka spices and generously drenched in coriander chutney, the roll is every inch a celebration of spicy flavors Indian cuisine is known for. A bite of the roll takes you immediately down memory lane visiting the old familiar, smoky tikka preparation at home. With a slight twist, the roti is infused with fresh avocados giving it a tender fruity flavor. The roll comes with chunky tikka pieces with an assortment of spices and crunchy vegetable and roti crisps making it a perfect meal.
We also ordered Crispy chicken wings, Pav Bhaji fondue and a light snack option the Chaat. The wings were juicy and flavorful and work perfect as starters. Pav Bhaji Fondue on the other hand is a perfect vegetarian option for a complete meal. The slow cooked vegetable and lentil bhaji is served with garlic crusted Pav (bun) comes with two types of chutneys and fresh onions. It is delightful, filling and absolutely brimming with the flavourfulness. The chaat came in a beautiful and colourful display, very appetizing and inviting. It is a lighter snack option particularly if you are visiting the venue in the afternoon. It can be perfectly combined with a Minty lemonade, Pakola or a shot of Karak Masala Chai (tea).
Our last dish for the evening was the dessert, which I have been desperately waiting for since I am a big fan of south Asian sweets. And the wait was worth it! The Jalebi with Rabri dessert was divine! The syrupy crusty warm jalebi with the side of rich Rabri is an unusual combination but it worked marvellously. Take a bite mixed with Rabri, or savour the jalebi and Rabri separately it never fails to satisfy! It is a must try at Roti Rollers.
As the December evening came to an end with the chatter of friends and the old familiar flavours, I felt connected, engaged and at home and that’s exactly what the restaurant intends to bring. A healthy taste of home in a very laidback ambiance, complete with soft music, lovely view of the Jumeirah beach and the ever enticing Indian food.
