Organic Farming in the UAE – Visiting organic farm
Learning all about Organic Farming in the UAE
We live in an ever-evolving world. A world that has been through turmoil and war, it has been through revolutions that defined us and scientific breakthroughs that made us who we are today. In the search for a better future human curiosity has challenged its boundaries and limitations, it all turned out well but in the process of all that the human race achieved, we have reached into the questionable dead sphere of production and its ethical values. Agriculture and farming is one system that faces a lot of debate and there are questions about its efficacy and impact on our overall environment.
Organic farming is the answer to the conventional agricultural system which originated early in the 20th century. It questions the practices, techniques and the methods used in farming that can greatly and directly affect human health as well as our environment. Today it is being developed by various agricultural organizations that involves extensive and vigilant certification. Organic farming relies on fertilizers of organic origin such as compost manure, green manure, and bone meal and places emphasis on techniques such as crop rotation and companion planting. Biological pest control, mixed cropping and the fostering of insect predators are encouraged. In general, organic standards are designed to allow the use of naturally occurring substances while prohibiting or strictly limiting synthetic substances.
The methods used in organic agriculture are internationally regulated and legally enforced by many countries. These regulations involve much more than choosing not to use pesticides, fertilizers, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), antibiotics and growth hormones.
Organic farming is also on the rise in the UAE. Although the climate of UAE is typically subtropical-arid with hot summers and warm winters, the country has left no stone unturned to boost the growth of its organic produce, for a sustainable future. Over the past few years, the number of farmers’ markets has increased tremendously and it also includes government-led initiatives which signify the fact that this progress is real and moving towards the right direction.
Kibsons International LLC, the number one ethical distributors of fresh, natural and organic food in the UAE, arranged a trip to the Mawasim Organic Farm Abu Dhabi (Al Rawafed Organic Agriculture Farm), to educate people about the efforts, time and passion that is required to produce organic food.
Established to provide the freshest and healthiest 100% organic produce to customers across the UAE, Mawasim Organic Trading LLC. has been striving to develop highly efficient organic produce solutions locally at the Al Rawafed Organic Agriculture farm, which is certified organic by Europe’s Istituto Certificazione Etica e Ambientale (ICEA), the Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology (ESMA), and Bureau Veritas.
The tour conducted by Mr. Marius Pakker (Managing Director of Farms) expounded what it takes to grow organically, the challenges and the methods used to cordon difficulties during organic production and harvest. Mawasim Organic uses advanced and sustainable agricultural and water technologies to produce a wide selection of fruits, vegetables, and herbs. The farm faces many challenges, including the use of organic/biological pesticides and insect repellents, the extremely hot and long summer season and water which is always scarce. Some crops are more challenging and require more care to grow organically; however, interestingly enough there always a natural, sustainable and ethical way out and nearly every commodity can be produced organically.
Typical organic farming practices include:
- Crop rotation an essential for efficient use of on-site resources
- Strict restrictions on the use of chemicals, synthetic pesticide and fertilizer
- The absolute prohibition on the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs)
- Taking advantage of on-site resources, such as livestock manure for fertilizer or feed produced on the farm
- Choosing plant and animal species that are resistant to disease and adapted to local conditions
A large number of restaurants in the UAE have also shown their commitment to local organic sourcing which is great in terms of business and of course at the sustainability front. As people have become more aware of the repercussions of their choices the supply and demand have also steadily increased from restaurants and direct consumers. Although the world has still a long way to go all-organic, all-local sustainable eating, there is definitely a positive change in the mindset of farmers, producers, and consumers, along with the involvement of the sustainable initiative by the Government, particularly in the UAE.
The future of Organic farming is bright, with a generation that is more conscientious and cares about the ethics and the values of how we produce and what goes in their mouth. The therapeutic tendency of farming in an AU-naturel manner might sound overwhelming in a world driven by A1 and computers but on a more human level, the simplicity of it is the way forward for a better future of our children and our planet…
