The Young Millennial
Young, talented and passionate Matt Sarafa is taking the fashion scene by storm. Growing up in Manhattan Beach, California Matt always had an artistic side, loving to draw and paint as a child. After binge-watching an entire season of “Project Runway” with his mother at the age of 7, he knew fashion was his true calling. Growing up in the age of YouTube, Matt started his own channel (makeupbymatt) which features makeup tutorials and fashion tips and advice, which is watched by thousands of budding fashionistas looking for a little help and inspiration. This caught the attention of producers for “Project Runway: Threads,” which aired in 2014. A fan favorite on that show, Sarafa was a no-brainer choice for producers when the networks newest show “Project Runway Juniors” aired in October.
Since his time on “Project Runway Juniors,” Matt has released two clothing lines. Debuting his first, HOT ME$$ in September of 2016, Matt began to explore the business side of fashion. Creating a unisex line that was properly titled HOT ME$$, drawing inspiration from a challenge while participating on “PRJ,” Matt was able to blur the gender lines with his first collection. Five months after the release of his first line, Matt had the honor of debuting his first high-end designer line during New York Fashion Week 2017. With his new line “FAKE,” Matt took his designer skills to the next level by creating a luxurious clothing line that is both exotic and unique. We talked to Matt about his love for fashion, his aspirations, and his latest collection.
Tell us about yourself and how did your love for fashion start?
My love for fashion started at 7 years old after watching a marathon of Project Runway. I had always been artistic as a kid, but as soon as I learned about the fashion industry, I immediately knew that I wanted to do this for the rest of my life. Since then, I’ve been growing my brand and working to solidify my name in the fashion industry!
How does it make you feel being so young in an industry that is full of fashion veterans?
It’s definitely a bit intimidating being so young and constantly being surrounded by people who have been in the industry for decades, but I think my age is also an advantage for me. I have a fresh perspective on the fashion industry that some more seasoned designers might not have.
What is your fashion philosophy and what inspires you to design?
My fashion philosophy is that you should wear whatever makes you feel confident and good about yourself. The freedom of expression in the industry is what really attracted me to fashion in the first place. My goal with all my designs is to make the wearer feel amazing as soon as they put on one of my creations.
Who is your favorite designer and why?
I have so many designers that I look up to for different reasons. I’ve always loved Alexander McQueen and his darker perspective on fashion. I really look up to brands like The Blonds and Chromat who think outside the box and come up with ideas so different than everyone else. I really respect originality and creativity.
Tell us about your latest collection?
My latest collection, FAKE, was shown at my debut New York Fashion Week show. The collection was inspired by social media and how everything isn’t always what it seems online. We are all guilty of only posting content that makes our lives seem perfect when in reality, that isn’t the case. I decided to take that concept and turn it into a fashion line, and I couldn’t be more ecstatic with the results. My NYFW show can be watched here: https://youtu.be/R6T8HGlVG-I
What are your future plans and how and where can our readers purchase your collection?
My plan for the future is to keep working just as hard (if not even harder) to keep growing my brand and establishing a name for myself in the fashion industry. I am currently in production for my FAKE collection, and select pieces will be up for sale on my website www.mattsarafa.com in the upcoming weeks. I am also working on expanding my jewelry line after the huge success of its initial launch! Stay tuned on all my social media platforms for more updates! Xoxo
