MAC Cosmetics an abbreviation for Make-up Art Cosmetics is one of the most coveted makeup brands in the world. Founded in Toronto in 1984 by Frank Toskan and Frank Angelo, the company is headquartered in New York City and became part of the Estée Lauder Companies in 1998. Today the company has a substantial global presence and the Middle East is one of the most flourishing markets. We spoke to Mariam Khairallah the Global Senior Artist MAC Cosmetics in the Middle East to learn more about her, latest MAC products and makeup trends in the region.
TD: Tell us about yourself, and how you came into the makeup industry?
Mariam Khairallah: I’m originally from Lebanon, I started working in the beauty industry, specifically makeup, in 2002. In the year 2005, I joined MAC Lebanon for a short while, after which I moved along with the brand to Dubai as an in-store Makeup Artist. In 2007 I grew to become a Resident trainer in Dubai which was the highlight of my career as from there I moved to become the Resident Senior Artist for the Middle East November 2012 and then lastly since January 2015 till date the Global Senior Artist in the Middle East.
TD: When did you join MAC Cosmetics?
Mariam Khairallah: The year 2005!
TD: How do you find the makeup industry in the region?
Mariam Khairallah: I find the makeup & beauty industry to be of great importance in the Middle East, especially that beauty is considered part of the traditions. The beauty industry in the Middle East specifically is an inspiration to the world. I find, that beauty and makeup embedded into this culture.
TD: Tell us about MAC Cosmetics latest products? What are the latest X trends in the region?
Mariam Khairallah: There are some new products. For example, the glitter trend is a sophisticated one that made a huge comeback this season with the usage of bold colors such as silver, gold, rainbow and so on. The secret to applying the perfect glitter eye makeup is using a primer first such as the MAC Prep+Prime 24 Hour Extended Eye Base; that preps the eyelid for eyeshadow application and extends the wear of the glitter up to 24 hours.
Another product I would recommend is MAC’s new Dazzleshadow liquid which gives a mesmerizing effect to the eyelids. Big brows are used as a powerful statement this season, super expressive. Style your brow with MAC’s unique new Shape & Shade Brow Tint which is the ultimate all-in-one, innovative power tool. A liquid brow liner on one end effortlessly fills in sparse brows with strokes of sheer, buildable color while a sponge tip on the other end neatly distributes tinted powder, shading and setting the entire brow in place for hours of waterproof wear.
TD: Given the fact that Dubai has a hot and humid climate with different ethnicities, what types of Makeup products do you have in particular to the region?
Mariam Khairallah: Pro long wear category, a comfortable long wearing category which consist of concealers, foundations, blush and powders. The collection provides a longwearing makeup which lasts up to 15 hours under any circumstances and weather conditions.
TD: What makeup product you think is essential for the Middles Eastern region, and why?
Mariam Khairallah: Eye Brows and Eye liners, Eye Kohl, mascaras are a “must have” when defining the Middle Eastern beauty. Eyes have been always the main focus feature for us in the region.
TD: What is your personal favorite MAC product that you cannot live without?
Mariam Khairallah: My three personal favorite products are, 1: M.A.C Extended Play Lash Mascara: This Mascara will turn your lashes to the center of gravity in a moment!
2: M.A.C Clear Brow Gel: Perfect for shaping, grooming and adding freshness to your brows
3: M.A.C Groundwork Prolong wear Paint pot that will maintain the longevity of your eye makeup
TD: Being a makeup artist, what advice would you like to give women when it comes to looking their best?
Mariam Khairallah: I personally believe that simplicity is the secret to beauty! There’s a unique beauty in each one of us, I would call it a character that can be enhanced through makeup.
The simpler your makeup looks the better. I always advise keeping the focus on one facial feature which will allow the rest of the face to stand out.
